Organizations send letter to Congress urging caution for legalizing CBD in dietary supplements and food
Recently, the Center for Science in the Public Interest, the Consumer Federation of America, Consumer Reports, and the Public Health Institute sent a letter to Congress regarding CBD laws.
The letter urges Congress to reject attempts at forcing regulators to legalize CBD immediately for use in food products and dietary supplements.
It states, “Forcing the FDA into rushed decisions and to prematurely implement major regulatory changes would result in an unsafe CBD market and distract the FDA from its current pandemic response and recovery efforts.”
The letter suggests that Congress should not evaluate the safety of consumer products. It states “a political decision to legislatively override a careful and scientific evaluation of CBD safety would create terrible precedent.”
Additionally, the letter lists suggestions for authorities and resources to evaluate CBD safety. It also goes into detail about the number of CBD products with higher-than-listed levels of THC or harmful contaminants.
Hemp farming legalized, smokable hemp products and dietary supplements banned in Louisiana
The Governor of Lousiana signed a House Bill early in early June 2020. The bill legalized hemp farming in Louisiana.
This means Louisiana farmers can get a taste of the hemp life. That is, once officials finalize their regulations. However, there are plenty of limits set forth for the new industry.
CBD products must sell as cosmetics or food. They may not be labeled or marketed as a dietary supplement. Retailers will need to get a license before selling CBD products, as well.
Additionally, no smokable hemp products may sell in the state.
CBD use becomes a criminal offense for troops
Military news websites are reporting that “U.S. troops can now be punished for using products that contain hemp or cannabidiol, according to a Defense Department memo recently made public.”
CBD restrictions existed in most areas of the military before this news broke. CBD was restricted in supplements, creams, tinctures, and ointments for two of the four Department of Defense services.
Now, CBD and hemp use is banned across all Department of Defense active-duty. It is also banned across all reserve component personnel. Before these regulations, the Navy and Marine Corps members could use shampoos, lotions, and creams containing CBD.
Charlotte’s Web and six other CBD brands support important research
Six CBD companies, along with Charlotte’s Web, have sponsored a scientific study conducted by ValidCare. Charlotte’s Web is a popular CBD company that produces tinctures, oils, gummies, and other CBD products. The study is a human trial. It will examine whether the daily consumption of full spectrum hemp-derived CBD or CBD isolate has any effect on the liver.
“As the market share leader, anchored in science, sponsoring ValidCare’s study made strategic sense for us,” said Deanie Elsner, Chief Executive Officer for Charlotte’s Web. “This research will provide important clinical data to guide our entire industry while also showing the FDA we’ve heard their requests and are answering their questions with precise data.”
Over 100 different CBD companies received an invite to participate in this research. Out of those 100+, only seven companies agreed to participate. This includes Charlotte’s Web.
