Can I Take CBD and Ibuprofen Together?

If you have acute or chronic pain, you may encounter ibuprofen and CBD oil as two options to manage your pain. Many people opt for either of these two products because they are available over the counter and may provide relief for everyday aches and pains. Sometimes a single option doesn’t do the trick, though, causing users to try a combination of options to manage their pain. You may be wondering, can I take CBD and ibuprofen together?

It is likely safe to combine CBD and ibuprofen

Provided you have successfully taken CBD and ibuprofen separately, you are likely to have no issue combining the two. There have been no reported interactions between the two compounds, but that doesn’t necessarily guarantee there won’t be future interactions reported.

There is no need to avoid combining CBD oil and ibuprofen if you want to maximize your pain relief. However, we advise users to exercise caution when initially combining the two substances.

How ibuprofen works to combat pain

Ibuprofen is a commonly used pain reliever that is typically easily accessible. It is inexpensive and typically works within 20-30 minutes when taken in pill form.

It falls under the category of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS). It works by preventing the body from producing prostaglandins, which are compounds produced in response to injuries and illnesses. Prostaglandin-responses can involve inflammation and swelling.

Ibuprofen can reduce pain and swelling by preventing prostaglandin production which prevents further inflammation.

How CBD works to combat pain

While CBD and ibuprofen are often used to remedy the same conditions, they do not work in the same ways. Rather than block prostaglandin production, CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2, indirectly influencing their behavior.

We have significantly more information available about the effects of ibuprofen than the effects of CBD. This is an unfortunate result of the blurry legality of CBD and the obstacles in the way of studying the compound more thoroughly.

However, we do know that CBD may provide pain relief by inhibiting certain neurotransmitters and activating inhibitory pain pathways. CBD is also suggested to enhance anandamide signaling, which may play a significant role in its pain-relieving effects. Anandamide, sometimes referred to as “the bliss molecule,” is thought to play an important role in pain perception

Final thoughts on CBD and ibuprofen

Pain management can be tough and frustrating. If you have the option to maximize your pain relief by combining two substances, rest assured CBD and ibuprofen are likely not going to cause any problems.

Some suggest taking the CBD and ibuprofen at different times of the day to space out the doses and minimize any risks, but there is currently no evidence to back this up.

We always recommend new CBD users consult with a medical professional if they have the opportunity. While CBD has a generally safe profile, it’s always a good idea to discuss any changes in supplements with a healthcare provider.
